Meet Your Speech Pathologist

Laurie Vanderwiele, MCD, CCC-SP

Owner, Speech-Language Pathologist

Laurie grew up in New Jersey and moved to South Carolina to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Clemson University. Following a twelve-year career as a teacher, she earned her Master of Communication Disorders in the area of Speech Pathology from The University of South Carolina. Laurie lives in Highlands, NC with her husband, two daughters, and two dogs. Laurie’s patients most frequently describe her as kind, thorough, a good listener, knowledgeable, and professional.

The field of Speech-Language Pathology appealed to Laurie because of the tremendous impact an SLP can make on the lives of her patients. She began her graduate program thinking she would be a school-based SLP, but quickly discovered additional loves for medical speech pathology and private practice. Laurie’s experiences in diverse settings (hospital, nursing home private practice, schools, and preschools) have equipped her to serve both adults and children with a variety of concerns in the areas of speech production, language, feeding and swallowing, fluency, voice, and cognition.

Laurie is one of only 175 SLPs in the State of North Carolina that has earned the title of Registered MBSIMP Clinician for rigorous training in dysphagia diagnostics. She also underwent advanced training in the language development of bilingual and deaf students, the Lindamood-Bell Reading Comprehension Program, and in the M-E-T-A program for treating executive functioning difficulties. She is a Certified Dementia Provider. She continues to stay abreast of research in her field through consistent continuing education courses to better serve her patients.

Laurie is nationally certified through the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.
